When Tennessee education leaders sought examples of effective elementary math support programs, they turned to Jefferson County Schools.

After identifying Jefferson County Schools as a standout district for its work in elementary mathematics, Dr. Christy Wall, Assistant Commissioner of Education for Academics and Instructional Strategy, invited district representatives to present their strategies to the Tennessee State Board of Education during the Board's August workshop meeting in Nashville.

Representing Jefferson County Schools were Kristi Waltke, Laura McClellan, and Bailey Walker, who shared the district's approach to supporting young learners through early intervention, collaboration, and high-quality instructional practices.

The presentation highlighted several initiatives that have helped strengthen mathematics learning across the district, including the Ready for Kindergarten Kit Project and the collaborative work taking place among teachers, instructional coaches, teacher leaders, principals, and school teams.

While Waltke, McClellan, and Walker delivered the presentation, district leaders emphasized that the recognition reflects the work of educators across Jefferson County Schools.

"This recognition belongs to all of us," Waltke said. "The progress we have made is the result of the dedication of our principals, instructional coaches, teacher leaders, teachers, and students."

The presentation included examples of collaborative planning and classroom practices that support mathematics instruction and student learning across grade levels. Through videos, photographs, and real-world examples from Jefferson County classrooms, district representatives shared how educators are working together to build strong mathematical foundations for students.

For Jefferson County Schools, the invitation represented more than an opportunity to present. It served as statewide recognition of the commitment, innovation, and collaboration taking place in schools throughout the district every day.

As state leaders continue to focus on improving student outcomes in mathematics, Jefferson County Schools is proud to have its work highlighted as an example of effective practice and honored to share its success story with education leaders from across Tennessee.
